Water Quality

Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company is jointly owned by Kitwe City Council – 70% and Kalulushi Municipal Council – 30%. The Company operates on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia and covers the City of Kitwe, Kalulushi and Lufwanyama Districts. Its core functions are summarized as follows:


To abstract water from Kafue River in Chambishi, Bulangililo and Nkana East and Mwambashi and Chati Rivers in Garneton and Kalulushi respectively. The water is transported to various treatment plants and Distribution Centres and households whose flow and quality is constantly monitored by the Safety Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) team.


To treat the water to meet the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), ZS 190:2010 drinking water quality standard.


To deliver the treated water to houses, industries, and other commercial areas.


To collect and treat the collected wastewater by stabilizing all pollutants in conformity with Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) effluent discharge license conditions.


To return the treated wastewater to the aquatic environment.


Nkana Water generates water quality reports that provide information on various parameters that indicate the cleanliness and safety of our water. These reports, monitored by our regulators ZEMA and NWASCO are crucial for ensuring public health and environmental protection. The specific details included in a water quality report can vary, but common parameters may include: Electrical Conductivity, pH, Turbidity (NTU), Colour – Apparent (PtCo), Escherichia Coliforms (CFU/100m/L), Faecal Coliforms (CFU/100m/L), Total Coliforms

Nkana Water Goes Cashless

Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company says it is adopting cashless transactions effective 1st February 2025. The Company says it is fully transitioning to a cashless payment system in order to serve customers better.

“All our Pay Points and Customer Service Centres will begin to transition to automated payments. This means that individual and corporate clients will be required to use available digital platforms for all water and sanitation bill payments such as mobile phones, banks and the short code *2021#,” the Company stated.

“We are therefore urging our customers to embrace the use of digital platforms which are secure, safe and faster.

Furthermore, Nkana Water is running a Swamo promotion alongside the cashless transition period. This promotion allows customers who clear the bills to pop a balloon and win daily prizes.

Customers can pay through Mobile Money by dialling *115 # on MTN, Airtel and Zamtel. Other platforms include dialling *2021 # and following prompts. Payments can also be made through all Kazang Point of Sale machines ZANACO, FNB, Tinng on *265 # and the website on www.nwsc.com.zm.

In case of complaints arising from high consumption, the company does meter testing at a fee which is refundable when it is established that the meter is faulty.

Our Water And Sewerage Plants

Bulangililo Water Plant

This plant was built in the early 50’s and abstracts water from the Kafue River. The plant produces an average of 75,000 m3 per day. The potable water is delivered to Riverside Distribution Centre, Chimwemwe Distribution Centre and Kwacha Distribution Centre for supply to the customers primarily in Kitwe North. 14,000 m3 of the water is exported to Kalulushi via Kwacha Distribution Centre.

The company is currently undertaking a project to enable the production of water in Kalulushi a reality.

Kafue Water Plant

The Kafue plant is located near Nkana East township. With an abstraction point sited on the banks of the Kafue River, the water works produces an average of 60,000 m3 per day.

The water produced is conveyed to 17th Avenue where it is post chlorinated. It is then delivered to Ndeke Distribution Centre, Wusakili Distribution Centre, Club Tanks and Mindolo Distribution Centre for delivery to the customers in Kitwe South.

The company collects foul water from the customer premises through its network of sewage pipes for treatment at its facilities as follows:
